Massive blast rips through China fireworks plant
(AP) – 20 minutes ago

BEIJING — An explosion ripped through a fireworks factory in northeast China early Monday, killing at least two people and leaving several missing.

Up to 50 workers were working at the factory in the city of Yichun in Heilongjiang province when it was rocked by a massive blast at about 9:40 a.m. (0140 GMT), according to a statement posted on the local government's website.

It said there were two confirmed deaths and that 22 workers were rescued. The fate of the remaining workers was not immediately known.

The blast was felt up to two miles (about 5 kilometers) away from the factory, and it smashed windows in the local government offices and other buildings, the statement said. Eyewitness' photos posted to the Internet showed plumes of smoke curled above the plant, and the government statement said secondary explosions were preventing rescue workers from entering the building.

Safety is lax at Chinese fireworks plants, and accidental blasts are common. Dozens of people also die each year from unsafe handling of fireworks used to celebrate weddings and traditional holidays.

In another industrial accident on Monday, an elevator plunged on a construction site, killing 11 workers riding in it.

Investigators were looking into the cause of the accident in the city of Meihekou in the northeastern province of Jilin. The elevator plunged by as many as 12 stories, according to a statement from the local government.

Although deadly accidents persist, China has placed an increasing emphasis on improving industrial safety.

Fatalities in the country's notoriously dangerous coal mines decreased to 2,631 last year, compared with a peak of 6,995 deaths in 2002, according to official figures.

That works out to 7.2 deaths a day in 2009, down from 19.1 a day in 2002.

An explosion at a fireworks factory injured at least ten people in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province Monday, local authorities said.

The explosion occurred at 9:40 a.m. at the factory in Wumahe District, Yichun City. Windows of buildings several kilometers away from the factory were shattered in the blast, residents told Xinhua.

As of 11:30 a.m., rescuers had saved ten people, all of whom were hospitalized.

There are usually 40 to 50 people at work in the factory on workdays. The exact number of workers is unknown in the factory when the explosion occurred.

No other information is available at the moment.

Vuurwerkfabriek ontploft in China

Chinese fireworks factory was operating illegallyLast Updated: 10 hours 32 minutes ago

Chinese state media says the fireworks factory in northeastern China where a massive explosion killed 20 people and injured more than 150 others on monday, was operating illegally.

The blast at the plant in Heilongjiang province shattered the windows of buildings a kilometre away and was felt five kilometres away.

Xinhua news agency reports the factory's production permit was confiscated in June over safety concerns and the plant owners were ordered to improve safety standards.

Workers were packing stock inside the factory at the time of the blast.

More than 2,000 residents were evacuated while some 550 firefighters and soldiers extinguished the blaze caused by the blast.

All nine fireworks factories in Heilongjiang province in northeast China were ordered shut Thursday, days after a blast at one of them killed 20 people.

The factories have been told to dismantle their production facilities by the end of the month, according to a statement on the website of the Heilongjiang Work Safety Administration.

"We have rescinded their permits for production," the statement said.

The official Xinhua News Agency said three government officials and two factory executives were fired or detained after Monday's blast. It said a preliminary investigation showed the plant was illegally producing fireworks.

Up to 50 people were working at the fireworks factory in the city of Yichun when it was rocked by an explosion, damaging nearby buildings and sparking secondary blasts.

A total of 153 people were injured by the blast, which could be felt up to 2 miles (5 kilometers) away and smashed windows in the local government offices and other buildings, the Xinhua reported.

Safety is lax at Chinese fireworks plants, and accidents are common. Dozens of people also die each year from unsafe handling of fireworks while celebrating weddings and traditional holidays.

China sluit vuurwerkfabrieken Heilongjiang

Death toll in China fireworks blast jumps to 33
(AFP) – 1 day ago

BEIJING — The death toll from an explosion last month at a fireworks factory in northeastern China has leapt to 33 from a previously reported 20 dead, state media said.

Xinhua news agency, in a report late Thursday, did not explain the sharp jump in the number killed in the August 16 accident near the remote city of Yichun in Heilongjiang province.

Authorities in the province shut down all fireworks factories after the blast at the facility, which was operating despite having its permit cancelled due to safety concerns.

The explosion left more than 150 people injured, and shattered windows in buildings a kilometre (half a mile) away.

Xinhua said three other people were still missing following the blast.

China's workplace safety record is notoriously bad, as an emphasis on profits has led to widespread disregard for even basic safety measures.
