Guatemalan Fireworks Explosion Kills Four

GUATEMALA CITY — Four people were killed and 12 others were injured in an explosion at a home-based fireworks factory in western Guatemala on Thursday, officials said.

The blast, which destroyed the factory in Chajaal, about 60 miles northwest of Guatemala City, damaged buildings up to 1,640 feet away and could heard for about 12 miles, said fire official Santos Poom.

The small Santa Barbara factory housed a large quantity of materials used to make fireworks for religious festivals, Poom said.

Officials did not immediately know the cause of the explosion.
